40's Florenza Buddha Celluloid Necklace Bought $18~Sold $39.00

1940's Florenza vintage costume necklace with celluloid plastic buddha, beads, pearl and rhinstones on a silver plated chain. Highly collectable and unique. A little history: The Florenza line of costume jewelry was fist produced by a company called the Dan Kassoff Company, which started in the 1930s and then operated under the Florenza name from 1948 to 1981. Florenza was a major player in the costume jewelry industry in New York City. Kasoff first worked in the garment industry but learned about the jewelry trade when hired by Speier Costume Jewelry Co. Kasoff worked there for ten years before going on his own. Florenza designs had a distinctive look. The stones were truly interesting and the metal work was expertly executed. The metals have an antique look to them, in gold, silver or in-between tones. The stones and metals come together in unusual, creative ways and the combination of all these elements is particularly striking. Florenza costume jewelry designs also tended to have an “old world” look and feel to them.

Antique Carved Bakelite Bracelets Bought for $22 Sold~$41

This is one of my favorite things to collect! Here are two antique green bakelite twin bracelets heavily carved and in excellent condition. The carving looks like tree branches and leaves and are heavy to the hand yet light on the wrist making an unmistakable clanking bakelite sound when they hit together on your wrist. These are one of a kind beauties! A little history about bakelite: The name of the plastic is polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, quite a mouth full! This was an early plastic thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. One of the coolest things about these bracelets is if you rub them vigorously and then smell them immediately where you rubbed, it gives off a formaldahyde odor that cannot be mistaken for anything else but bakelite. Bakelite was the first completely synthetic plastic. Because of its durability and beauty, its uses were limitless. Its popularity grew very quickly, and within 15 years it had taken the world by storm. You could find everything from electrical plugs to ornate jewelry made from Bakelite. Art Deco was the period that bakelite was most popular!

Industrial Machine Age Clip On Bed Lamp Bought $4~Sold $39.00

Vintage Antique Industrial Machine Age Clip On Reading Night Bed Lamp Light found at an antique shop in Shallotte and I could not believe this piece was only $4. I grabbed her up and she was really worth $39. A little History about the machine age: The Machine Age can be mostly associated with the early 20th century – at a time just between the first and second world wars. The mass production of steel and metal for automobiles or skyscrapers was in full swing. Architecture, film, radio, and art were all taken to new and extreme levels. Basic forms for everyday home products had already been developed, but with the Machine Age, designers were able to experiment and invent new looks for products such as appliances, furniture, and electronics. What they came up with was nothing like anyone had seen before and certainly did not represent the previous Victorian period of style. Homes were soon filled with futuristic, streamlined items which led into the Art Deco style.

Cool antique cast iron standard oil truck bought at an auction for $2 and sold for $15.00. Throughout the 1870s, nearly 16 yrs prior to the 1st commercially identified farm toy was created, toy manufactures began to explore the prospects of cast iron. At the same time, tin toys were the number one of their fame, simply tin did not have a long lifespan enough for manufacturing long lasting toys; cast iron was durable and also not as costly.

Update Victorian 1800s Antique Autograph Album Paid $2~Sold $39

I went to an auction last week and I paid $2 for this little gem. I just sold this last night for $39. Very exciting! This is such a lovely piece of Victorian history full of sentiments of love, friendship, signatures and poems with quill pens and ink, given to Minnie by her cousin May to obtain signatures and memories from her classmates before she wed in Groveport Ohio. Beautiful penmanship and a truely fasinating read. Beautiful Victorian flower decals on most pages and it looks like most of the signatures were taken around 1883-1886. Such sweet quotes like "May your life have just enought clouds to make a beautiful sunset" by Ella from Groveport, OH "Remember me and bare in mind a truthful friend is hard to find and if you find one good and true cling to them that cling to you: by Anna from Edwards, OH. This is a one of a kind piece of history truly sought after by collectors. I will let you know the outcome of this one!
